Starbuck Elementary students are leading the way as the first Racine Unified school to compost cafeteria food scraps.

With help from the Racine Food Waste Composting Committee, students in grades 3–5 collect about 40 pounds of food waste each week and learn how composting reduces landfill waste and benefits the environment.

The program is helping students build lifelong habits, with hopes that the program will eventually expand to other schools.
