Julian Thomas Elementary School welcomed Governor Tony Evers, Racine Mayor Cory Mason, Racine Police Chief Art Howell, Superintendent Dr. Eric Gallien and many more special guests for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony held on Dr. King's birthday on Wednesday.

During the event, students and distinguished guests heard about the ways Dr. King made a difference in the world and also listened to several guest speakers before placing a memorial wreath on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue in Racine. The statue is just down the road from the school.

Governor Evers addresses the crowd talking about how everyone could learn lessons from Dr. King, including to always treat others with respect and never give up when faced with adversity.

Dr. Gallien echoed that statement, “This celebration is about more than laying a wreath, more than just acknowledging all the great things that Dr. King did for our country and for our communities, but it’s about ‘What can we as individuals do for one another?’”

The event was organized by Lisa Parham of the Racine Mirror and Racine Insider community newspapers.
