Racine Unified to get 73 New School Buses with Enhanced Safety Features

Racine Unified School District will soon have 73 new buses in the fleet equipped with state-of-the-art features. In the next several weeks, Durham School Services will slowly phase out some of the District’s older buses and replace them with brand new ones.

Over the past several years, RUSD and Durham have worked together to keep transportation costs down allowing Durham the ability to purchase these new buses this year and more than 60 additional buses over the next four years.

The new buses will have upgrades that will include:

  • A child check system to assist in the assurance of no child left on the bus.
  • Added heater in the middle of the bus.
  • Air suspension for a more comfortable ride.
  • A new PA system for better communication with students.

Some of these buses are already on the road. The rest will be inspected by the Department of Transportation and then added to the fleet in the coming weeks.
