Smart Start 2020

Thank you for your ongoing patience, support and input. As you are aware, our Re-Entry Planning Team continues to work diligently to put together plans that meet the academic and social/emotional needs of our students while keeping everyone safe.

Over the last several weeks, we’ve gathered feedback from thousands of parents and guardians, staff and community members through surveys and we continue to work closely with our local and state health departments to make informed and data-driven decisions.

Right now, Racine County remains in the “Very High” risk category for COVID-19. Therefore, RUSD will continue remote learning until further notice.

We want nothing more than to bring our students back to school face-to-face and commit to doing so when we know it is a safe decision. That’s why RUSD has developed gating criteria based on CDC and health department guidance for decision-making moving forward.

You can view our gating criteria here.

As part of this criteria, RUSD has one core indicator and four secondary indicators for phasing into an in-person model. Our core indicator is: number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days.
When this indicator moves to the moderate level (yellow) we will begin bringing our youngest students back in-person first. From there, we will phase in our older students. Please note that our secondary indicators could influence the timing and transition from one phase to the next.

Once Racine County sees a decrease in new cases over a two-week period, we will transition between phases within 1-2 weeks. Special education student return will be based on IEP team consideration regardless of the phase for re-entry.

We ask all our families to remain flexible and be prepared for a possible transition. We will work to provide as much advance notice as we can. You can view our phased plan below.

We continue to plan and prepare, responding to the latest information, collaborating with our local health departments and continuing to be flexible and fluid in order to provide our students with the best possible learning experience.
