More than 400 7th and 8th-grade girls got the opportunity to learn more about what interests them during the 7th annual Girls Empowered by Math & Science (GEMS) conference held at UW-Parkside on Thursday, Jan. 16.
GEMS focuses on empowering women for a future in math and science by giving them access to materials that could lead them to possible careers and places to focus their education. Students participated in hands-on demonstrations, including cockroach races (!), a human anatomy lab experience, heard from guest lecturers and were able to ask questions to women currently working in the math and science fields.
A special thank you to Girls Inc., AAUW and UW-Parkside for all your work to plan, prepare and execute this wonderful experience for our students!
