National School Lunch Program

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally-assisted meal program created to offer healthy, balanced meals to students. Participating school districts will only receive a reimbursement from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the qualifying meals served.  Incomplete meals are not reimbursable and are considered a la carte meals.

What is included in a qualifying lunch?

A qualifying lunch includes the following items:

  1. Meat or Meat Alternative
  2. Grains / Bread
  3. Vegetables
  4. Fruit
  5. Fat-Free or 1% Milk

Students must take 3-5 of the components or servings listed above and must include at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetable to qualify as a complete meal, and can be served at no charge.

Qualifying Meal vs. A La Carte

Students who select additional items or a meal that does not contain the components necessary to qualify as a meal will be charged "a la carte" or per item.
