Early Learning Programs
Racine Unified offers a variety of programs and services for early learners, including:
4-year-old kindergarten (4K) is a developmentally appropriate educational program of learning and activities for 4-year-old children. 4K is free for children who live within RUSD's boundaries. Students attend classes for three hours, Monday through Thursday and some Fridays. Both morning and afternoon sessions are offered.
P-COC (Parent-Child Oriented Classroom)
The P-COC (Parent-Child Oriented Classroom) program for three-year-olds is located at Red Apple Early Childhood, 914 St. Patrick St. The P-COC program offers a unique opportunity for parents to work with their children in the classroom as parents (or an adult) attend class with their child once a week.
Beginning next fall 2016, RUSD will introduce a Montessori Program for 3, 4 and 5-year-olds. Montessori education emphasizes independence and respect for a child’s naturally developing cognitive, physical and social skills. The RUSD Montessori Program will launch with four multi-age classrooms and have space for approximately 120 RUSD students. Three and 4-year-old students will attend a half-day and 5-year-olds will attend a full day. Wrap-around care will be available.
Racine Unified offeres free developmental screenings for any child between the ages of birth to five who is not attending kindergarten.
