Horlick High School Hosts WSMA Large Group Contest for String Orchestras

Horlick High School hosted the WSMA Large Group Contest for String Orchestras on Thursday Nov. 16th. The Orchestras each performed musical literature from a designated contest list supplied by the Wisconsin State Music Association. They were judged on their musical expression, technical performance of the music and quality of music performed. The judges were Mr. David Schripsma from Kenosha, Wisconsin, Joyce Malloy from Hartford, Wisconsin and Larry Sheets from Waukesha, Wisconsin.

There are 4 levels of competition. Class M and class C for Middle School level musicianship, Class B for very advanced Middle School and Average High School Musicianship and Class A for the Advanced High School Musicians.

  • Jerstad Agerholm K-8 Orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Beth Kapralian, received a 1 (the highest level) ratings in class M.
  • McKinley Middle School Orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Donna Clark, received a 1 (the highest level) ratings in class M.
  • Gifford K-8 School Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Day, had a fantastic performance and received a 1 rating in Class B.
  • Park High School, directed by Mr. John Schoettler, performed very well in Class A for a critique only.
  • Walden III High School, under the direction of Mrs. Laura Shapovalov, received a 2 rating for a very fine performance in Class A .
  • Case High School, under the direction of Mrs. Cynthia Banaszak received a 1 rating in Class A.
  • Horlick High School String Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Joshua Sherman, received a 1 rating in Class A.
